Life with German societies
The first all-male German society was formed in Helenendorf in 1993. Its aims were entertainment, companionship and the discussion of business matters. It kept a library and a very well-attended bowling lane. In addition, the string and brass orchestras and choirs held six to ten concerts a year.
Helenendorf’s women founded their own society in order to help those who needed it regardless of religion or nationality. They organized fundraising events such as theatre performances and jumble sales in the society house (Vereinshaus, later house of culture or Kulturhaus) or garden.
In addition there were hunting associations, gymnastics, track and field and cycling groups and, of course, football teams.
